Facing Uncertainty While Staying the Course on Sustainability

Published on 26 November 2025

The Luxembourg Sustainability Forum 2025, the flagship event organised by IMS – Inspiring More Sustainability – took place this year on 25 November in the studio of the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, thanks to the support of the City of Luxembourg, and was also livestreamed to ensure accessibility to as many people as possible. This edition brought together more than 700 participants, including 250 attending in person. Keynotes, interviews, campfire discussions and a participatory musical experience: the varied formats shaped the afternoon and maintained strong audience engagement.

In the face of the “polycrisis” we are experiencing, it is crucial not to slow down our efforts, but instead to continue progressing along the path toward a resilient society. The speeches highlighted the need for leadership that matches the scale of the challenges:

We are now halfway through this decisive decade for the climate […] The climate crisis is not just a technological crisis; it is also a crisis of power. Real solutions must tackle power head-on. Who holds it, who benefits from it, and who suffers from it?Clover Hogan, climate activist and founder of Force of Nature.

Showing leadership means not only giving ourselves confidence, but above all giving confidence in the future. If we cannot project ourselves positively into the future, our natural reflex will be to retreat into the past – particularly the fantasised past of the post-war economic boom. This is exactly Donald Trump’s political project. We can clearly see how dangerous a temptation this is for democracy, and this is why we absolutely must once again make the transition a project that enables us to envision the future in a positive way, to invent a new economy, to redefine the role of business in society, and to give new meaning to work.François Gemenne, expert in environmental geopolitics, co-author of the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report and researcher.

The importance of embodying new narratives, as well as reintroducing long-term thinking into decision-making, was emphasised by Mathieu Baudin, historian and futurist, Director of the Institut des Futurs Souhaitables: “In Luxembourg, in France and in Europe, we do not have a problem of solutions, for there are many; we have a problem of horizon – of deciding where we want to go together. By choosing our horizon, we respond to Seneca’s aphorism: ‘No wind is favourable to those who do not know where they are going’. […] The end of a world is not the end of the world. It may be a conscious opportunity to take part in a new Renaissance. I would say that the future is not something to be predicted; it is something to be prepared. It is a matter of will, not a matter of determinism.

Concrete and replicable initiatives were also presented, including circularity, open governance and renewable energy. Eight companies shared their approaches and strategies, demonstrating that sustainability and performance can indeed go hand in hand.

Spotlight on the Acting Local initiative: Trees in the City – Business in Action

Led by IMS Luxembourg and the City of Luxembourg, this initiative marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation between the City and the organisations within its territory, paving the way for future Local Green Deals. As the first concrete action of this public–private partnership, it takes the form of tree planting in urban areas, directly linked to the capital’s climate resilience objectives. Since the launch of the initiative, seven organisations have taken part, enabling the planting of 149 trees across different neighbourhoods. The aim is to embed this dynamic over the long term and to prepare, together, the next Local Green Deal projects.

In the final part of the afternoon, the importance of collective action and of connecting with oneself and others was highlighted through two timeless and participatory moments, proposed by Hugo Paul and the Jazz Quartet specially created for the occasion by Alex Steele.

Nothing great has ever been achieved alone […] We are at a moment in history when cooperation has never been more essential, because, as we’ve noted, when we speak about ecological issues – but also technological, geopolitical and democratic ones – we are above all speaking about systemic challenges. We need everyone. We will not be able to address these challenges in silos, and yet we find ourselves in a time when we have never been so poor at cooperating. That is what I call the Crisis of Us.Hugo Paul, explorer of communities.
