IMS Luxembourg has mobilized its network to take part in the global initiative Digital Cleanup 2025, to reduce the environmental footprint of digital technology. The principle is easy: delete unnecessary data (emails, documents, applications, etc.) to limit the invisible pollution generated by their storage and processing.
11 member organisations participated to this action in the official week, and 6 more plan to do the cleanup in the coming months. This initiative has brought together organisations from a wide range of sectors: telecommunications, financial services, insurance, public administrations, education and several others.
The results
Deleted data:
- More than 1.3 million emails deleted, which represents about 260 GB.
- More than 640.000 documents and miscellaneous items deleted, which represents about 2.3 TB.
- 363 mobiles collected and recycled thanks to partnership with Orange Luxembourg
Please note: the data monitoring was not carried out by all the companies, and some of them were not able to share exact data. As a result, the figures presented here are probably much lower than in reality, and the actual number is much higher.
Concrete actions, but also sustainable habits
Next to a regular cleanup, the week was also an opportunity to share best practices to make it part of one’s day-to-day, for example:
- Put in place automatic sorting of emails and regular deletion of unnecessary messages.
- Avoid large attachments by favouring sharing links.
- Regularly clean shared servers and cloud spaces.
- Raise employee awareness of the environmental impact of digital technology.
The results demonstrate the growing commitment of organisations to a more sober and responsible digital future. Thank you to all the participating organisations for their involvement! Given its success, the initiative will be repeated by IMS in 2026!
