UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) is the United Nations refugee agency. For over 70 years, we have been leading and coordinating operations worldwide to protect refugees and find solutions to their problems.
Our mission is to ensure that people forced to flee violence, persecution, war, or disaster can exercise their right to asylum and safety.
Since 1950, we have been active on several continents, providing vital assistance and protection to refugees, asylum seekers, stateless people and internally displaced persons. We help save lives and support millions of people fleeing their homes to build a better future.
In the short term, we strive to guarantee the rights and well-being of refugees. In the long term, we aim to help them return to their country of origin when circumstances allow. If this is not possible, the UNHCR helps them integrate into their host country or resettle in another country. The UNHCR also helps stateless people.
