Collect clothes with IMS and the Spënchen association

Published on 7 October 2024

En bref
What? Organise a clothing collection within your company aimed at helping those in need.
When? From November 1st to November 30th, 2024
Where? Within your company
For Whom? All IMS members and associate members

How to Participate?

  1. Register your company by clicking here.
  2. Find a collection space within your premises
Locate an area within your facilities that you can dedicate to this collection. This will make it easy for employees to deposit clothing they no longer wear.
  3. Communicate
    - Internally: Inform your employees about your participation in this clothing collection to encourage them to donate their clothing. You can display the communication materials sent by IMS following your registration.
    - Externally: Inform your network about participating in this collection on social media to motivate other organisations to join the movement.
Wait during the collection period and encourage your employees to contribute.
IMS will provide a communication kit once you register.
  4. Inform the IMS team at the end of the collection: We'll take care of the rest!
Once the collection is complete, inform the IMS team of the approximate quantity of clothing collected. Spënchen will then come to pick up the bags directly from your premises.
The collected clothing will be donated to Spënchen Association (The National Collection and Sorting Center for Clothing Donations) and then distributed to Luxembourg's needy people

By following these simple steps, you reduce unused, discarded, or destroyed textiles while supporting an important social cause.

What clothing to donate?

As part of this campaign, you can donate all types of clothing.
Please note that you can only give clothing in good condition, without holes or stains, and must be clean.

Priority Needs Include:

  • Men's clothing in small sizes
  • Warm clothing and sportswear
  • Accessories: shoes, belts, hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas, underwear
  • Sheets and bed covers, tea towels, towels, and bath gloves

About Spënchen asbl: the National Collection and Sorting Center for Clothing Donations
The National Collection and Sorting Center for Clothing Donations allows for the best coverage of urgent clothing needs for international protection seekers, refugees, migrants, homeless individuals, and anyone in need—all thanks to the solidarity of the Luxembourg population!

Dressing has a significant impact! The fashion industry has a substantial environmental impact, accounting for 2% to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions (Source: UNEP 2023). The challenges the fashion industry poses are both environmental and social. In Europe, 4 million tonnes of textiles are discarded each year, with 80% ending up in household waste bins and subsequently being buried or incinerated (source: Ademe). At the same time, 64% of the discarded clothing could still be worn (The Plastic Atlas, Heinrich Böll Foundation, 2020).

In this crisis, Luxembourg is no exception: the equivalent of 95 t-shirts is discarded every minute, amounting to 12.26 kg of clothing per person per year (Source: "Textile Flows in Luxembourg," January 2022, information available at www.caritas.lu). Of the 7,454 tonnes of textile waste produced in Luxembourg in 2018, less than 2% are reused locally.

Several solutions exist to limit this impact:

  • Consume less
  • Consume better
  • Adopt the right habits
