The City Nature Challenge (CNC) is originally organised by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. It is a citizen science project primarily designed to document urban biodiversity and engage city residents with the nature surrounding them (also known as a bioblitz). The project is conceived as a global collaborative effort to discern who can make the most observations, identify the most species, or have the most participants. The project began in 2016 and has now expanded to over 400 regions worldwide.
The goals of the CNC are to:
- Connect urban residents with their local nature.
- Connect people with each other: building both in-person and online community around local nature.
- Collect data on urban biodiversity for use in science, management, and conservation.
- Develop volunteer biodiversity documentation globally.
- Have fun in the context of friendly competition!
The National Museum of Natural History of Luxembourg is the national coordinator of this event, and IMS is once again joining this initiative, inviting all members to participate in this bioblitz.
