Clothing collection campaign with IMS and Spënchen asbl

Published on 3 November 2023

What? Organise a clothing collection within your company aimed at helping those in need.
When? From November 1st to November 30th, 2023
Where? Within your company
For Whom? All IMS member companies

In Europe, 4 million tonnes of textiles are discarded each year, with 80% ending up in household waste bins and subsequently being buried or incinerated (source: Ademe). At the same time, 64% of the discarded clothing could still be worn (The Plastic Atlas, Heinrich Böll Foundation, 2020).

In this crisis, Luxembourg is no exception: the equivalent of 95 t-shirts is discarded every minute, amounting to 12.26 kg of clothing per person per year (Source: "Textile Flows in Luxembourg," January 2022, information available at www.caritas.lu). Of the 7,454 tonnes of textile waste produced in Luxembourg in 2018, less than 2% are reused locally.

That's why we encourage you to act by organising clothing collections within your company!

The collected clothing will be donated to Spënchen Association (The National Collection and Sorting Center for Clothing Donations) and then distributed to people in need.

How to Participate?

  1. Register your company by clicking here or by contacting Anna Dockes, Project Manager
  2. Find a collection space within your premises. This will make it easy for employees to deposit clothing they no longer wear.
  3. Communicate!
    • Internally: Inform your employees about your participation in this clothing collection to encourage them to donate their clothing. You can display the communication materials sent by IMS following your registration.
    • Externally: Inform your network about participating in this collection on social media to motivate other organisations to join the movement.
  4. Wait during the collection period and encourage your employees to contribute to this initiative.
  5. Inform the IMS team of the approximate quantity of clothing collected. Spënchen will then come to pick up the bags directly from your premises.

By following these simple steps, you reduce unused, discarded, or destroyed textiles while supporting an important social cause.

What clothing to donate?

As part of this campaign, you can donate all types of clothing. Please note that you can only give clothing in good condition, without holes or stains, and must be clean.

Priority Needs Include:

  • Men's clothing, particularly smaller sizes
  • Warm clothing, shoes, sportswear, belts, hats, scarves, gloves, umbrellas
  • Undergarments

On October 26, 2023, the annual Luxembourg Sustainability Forum (LSF), organised by IMS Luxembourg, occurred. This year, we discovered the backstage of our economic lives: eating, dressing, travelling, working... These actions all hold tremendous potential for moving us towards a desirable future.
Dressing has indeed a significant impact! The fashion industry has a substantial environmental impact, accounting for 2% to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions (Source: UNEP 2023). The challenges the fast fashion industry poses are environmental and social.

Discover (or rediscover) the "STYLE" session of the Luxembourg Sustainability Forum to better understand the ecological and social issues related to the fashion industry and how to address them. Replays available soon.
